VOYAGES OF THE SAILING VESSEL HOG TIME

After letting my boat go downhill for several years, it's back into cruising shape.  Here are the trips I've made recently.  Click on the links for photos and GPS tracks.  Homeport: Dana West Marina, Dana Point, CA.

Long Beach / Alamitos Bay

Depart Dana Point on 8/31/05 and return 9/2/05.  Solo Trip.  About 60 nautical miles (69 statute miles) total.  Motor half way up and then sail the rest.  Sail 95% of the way back using the cruising spinnaker, averaging a somewhat slow 3.8 knots (better than listening to the motor, though, and burning $4/gal gas).  Stayed at a guest slip at the marina.  Close walk to a lot of restaurants and stores.  On the way up had a group of a couple of hundred porpoises/dolphins all around me for a couple of minutes.  Pretty neat.

White's Landing, Catalina Island

Depart Dana Point on 8/24/05 and return 8/27/05.  Solo trip.  About 70 nautical miles (80 statute miles) total.  Motor all the way over. Motor back then sail last 6 miles.  Stay on a mooring at White's Landing (Cove).  I sleep better on a mooring, rather than anchoring. Break in my new propane BBQ.  Since I didn't tow my dinhgy, I was on the boat the whole time!

Oceanside

Depart Dana Point 8/16/05 and return 8/19/05:  Solo trip.  About 40 nautical miles (46 statute miles) total.  Sail all the way down, averaging 4.9 knots.  Motor back, except sail last 5 miles. Stay at guest docks, with an easy walk to restaurants.  Besides, there is no anchoring or mooring in the harbor.  A bit "stinky" there, because of the "red tide".
